The Best Prosecco for Valentines Day

Looking for a great but affordable prosecco to celebrate with your loved one for Valentines Day? Prima Magazine have rounded up and taste tested the best prosecco around to find you the budget options that won’t let you down. Around 150 million bottles of prosecco are produced every year wowza making it one of the most popular wines in the world. This sparkling white wine is grown in the areas around Venice in the north east of Italy – usually on hillsides. It is made from Glera grapes and has wonderful flavours of lemon and pear and lovely floral scents. It comes in two varieties, frizzante (slightly sparkling) and spumante (more sparkling). Most of the prosecco sold in Britain is spumante. It’s light enough to be drunk before large meals as an aperitif and it is the main constituent of Bellini cocktails (just add peach purée). Prosecco goes wonderfully with fruit or with fish – but it doesn’t have the intensity of Champagne and doesn’t go so well with stronger flavours.

The best dry prosecco we found, with lots of dry citrus flavours and strong scents of lime.  Marks and Spencer’s (£20)

Lighter in taste than many proseccos, this has a lovely golden colour, soft bubbles and a scent of autumn apples and plums. Valdobbiadene Prosecco Spumante DOCG, £7.49, (ALDI)

A delightful prosecco, which has gathered a handful of international wine awards. Very light, superb fragrance and great value. Asda Extra Special Prosecco, (£6.50)

A well priced prosecco with lots of apple and peach flavours. Nice and summery. I Heart Prosecco, £7, Tesco

A great prosecco from Morrisons. With soft lemon flavours which linger and a gentle sparkle. Reasonably priced. Great as an aperitif. Signature Prosecco, £9.99, Morrisons

Plus here is a recipe for a delicious Bellini – the classic prosecco cocktail!

Add 50ml/2fl oz peach purée to a chilled flute. We like Reflets de France Peach Purée (£2.50 for 1l, available at ocado.com).

Simply top with 100ml/3½fl oz prosecco and stir gently.

Which is your favourite?
